A satellite meeting devoted to the issues surrounding rectal microbicide development will be held on 28th March at the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1G 0AE (see the Royal Society of Medicine's web site for a location map). Delegates attending the conference should register from 0830 and the meeting will commence at 0900.
The meeting is sponsored by the HIV Prevention Trials Network of the Division of AIDS at the National Institutes of Health, the UCLA AIDS Institute, Amfar, and Virco-Tibotec. The meeting will provide a detailed update on the epidemiology and behavioral aspects of anal intercourse, the mathematical modeling of the impact of rectal microbicides, the pathogenesis of the mucosal transmission of HIV, and approaches to rectal microbicide development. The invited faculty will provide a global perspective on rectal microbicide development and stimulate a discussion of the critical research agenda needed to move microbicides from the laboratory into the clinic.
